A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
